WHAT HAPPENED?

Chapter Three

2KDamage

They were not meant to meet.

The system paired people by efficiency, not connection. Relationships existed only as long as they improved output. Anything else was corrected.

But somehow, they slipped through.

Two schedules crossing too often. Two anomalies the system couldn’t quite smooth out. Where he faltered, she stabilised. Where she numbed, he felt too much.

They began in silence.

A shared pause in a corridor the system barely watched. No purpose. No metric. Just presence.

“I don’t feel anything anymore,” he said once.

“I feel everything,” she replied. “Just not the right things.”

That was enough.

He was slipping. Missing tasks. Ignoring prompts. The system tightened around him, urging correction. She stayed perfect. Balanced. Untouched on the surface.

But perfection is its own kind of fracture.

“You need to stabilise,” she told him.

“You need to stop disappearing,” he answered.

The system noticed.

Schedules shifted. Distance enforced. Warnings issued.

Still, they found each other.

Until the message came.

Reintegration required.

He showed her. She already understood.

“If you keep going like this, they’ll erase you,” she said.

“If I don’t, I’ll erase myself.”

The system didn’t see the difference.

For the first time, she hesitated.

Not in action.

In belief.

“I don’t know how to leave,” she admitted.

“You don’t leave,” he said. “You just stop giving it everything.”

That was when the system closed in. Alerts rising. Pressure building. The blind spot disappearing.

She had a choice.

Stay whole in a system that hollowed her out.

Or fracture and feel something real.

Her metrics stabilised. Perfect.

Then she reached up and loosened the thread at her collar.

A small break.

Almost nothing.

The system flagged it immediately.

But his numbers dropped. For the first time, he was steady.

Not because the system released him.

Because she didn’t.

Two unstable lives, now linked.

The system recalculated.

And for the first time, it found something it couldn’t resolve.

Not rebellion.

Just two souls, breaking differently, choosing not to break alone.
